About Well Adapt

Well Adapt is reimagining health and social care through the lens of disability justice.

Disabled and chronically ill people are regularly abandoned by health and social care systems leading to completely avoidable pain, hardship and death.

Well Adapt supports chronically ill people to manage symptoms like pain and fatigue. We work with policymakers, healthcare providers, and communities to build health and social care systems grounded in disability justice – recognising that intersecting marginalisations such race, gender, class, and sexuality all shape how people experience health and care.

About the role

We are looking for a Communications (Disability) Intern to support our work You will help transform evidence, research and recommendations into practical resources that Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) can use in their own work.

A key part of the role will be helping to develop resources based on recommendations from the UK Covid-19 Inquiry. This will involve analysing reports and recommendations, identifying their relevance to issues facing disabled people, and creating accessible resources, templates and briefing materials that DPOs can adapt for their own work.

Alongside resource development, you will support our wider work on communicating with the public and stakeholders around issues of health and disability.

This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about disability justice, looking to gain hands-on experience in digital communications and advocacy.

  • Support the development of resources for Disabled People’s Organisations.
  • Analyse reports, recommendations and research documents, identifying key messages and practical actions.
  • Translate complex information into clear, accessible and persuasive written materials.
  • Draft resources including template letters, briefing papers, social media content and templates.
  • Conduct desk research on disability policy, legislation and emerging government consultations.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Make notes from verbal instructions and take forward agreed actions.

Essential:

  • Due to our funding, you must be a resident in Islington, Camden or Hackney council areas
  • A genuine passion for disability advocacy
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Desk research skills
  • Curiosity and a desire to learn

Desireable:

  • Lived experience of disability, chronic illness, or neurodiversity is highly desirable.
  • An eye for visual design on social media (optional)

Equal opportunities

At Well Adapt, we’re committed to building a team that reflects the rich diversity of the communities we work with. We actively welcome applications from disabled people, chronically ill people, people of colour, LGBTQIA+ people, and anyone whose experiences are shaped by marginalisation. We know that lived experience is valuable expertise.

As an organisation run for and by disabled people, we are committed to meeting the accessibility needs of applicants and employees. Please let us know by email at [email protected] if there’s anything you need to be able to engage with the recruitment process to the best of your ability.

How to apply

Please apply before Sunday 28 June 23:59 as possible by sending the following to this email [email protected]:

  • Your CV
  • Which borough you currently reside in (must be one of Islington, Camden, or Hackney)
  • Your answer to the question “Why do you care about disability advocacy?”. You are welcome to send this in text or voice note. Please keep the answer to 100-200 words or 1-2 minutes.

Please do not send a pro-forma cover letter. As stated in the essential qualities, attention to detail is important in this role. Sending a cover letter instead of answering the requested question will not demonstrate this ability.

Please do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to generate an answer to the above question. We are all for the use of tools to make job applications as accessible as possible e.g. Text to speech software or using AI to extract information from your CV for a pro-forma cover letter. However in this case we want to know why you care about disability advocacy, not why chatGPT does. It doesn’t need to be eloquently written, just genuinely felt.

If you are successful at the CV stage of your application, we will ask you to do a paid interview task in the week of the 29th June. If you are successful at the task stage of your application you will be invited to interview on the week of the 6th July. The successful candidate will be informed on the week of the 13th July. The role will begin on the 20th July.
