Disabled Joy

Disabled Joy is a long running project on exploring the joys and pleasures in disability. Born out of a solo-artist commission from the Raze Collective, the project has since developed beyond artist Georgia Bondy’s studio, and taken many forms. However, the core questions remain the same: what is disabled joy and how do we get more of it? Right now, we are developing a Disabled Joy Podcast based on previous events in the series so watch this space.  Until then, feel free to explore previous Disabled Joy events below. Previous Events

COVID Inquiry

Well Adapt is contracted by Disability Rights UK (DR UK) to support Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) as a core participants on the Covid-19 Inquiry.  Well Adapt helps to guide Bhatt Murphy, the legal team representing the DPOs, on how to talk about disability when giving evidence during the Inquiry. This is based on the social model of disability, which views disability as being caused by societal barriers rather than impairments or conditions. The aim is to represent a wide range of disabled people’s experiences during the pandemic.  We engage with disabled people & collect their stories to ensure they’re being represented accurately in the Inquiry. We also put together recommendations for policy change to prevent harm to disabled people in the next pandemic. DPOs recommendations are presented to the government during the Inquiry, and each organisation continues to lobby for improvements to the system that will support disabled people.  To

Embryo Research Legislation

Well Adapt worked with various organisations on behalf of Nuffield Council on Bioethics and UKRI Sciencewise, on public consultations about the 14 day embryo research rule and whether it should change. UKRI Sciencewise organised a citizens summit to find out the public’s opinions on the subject, and it was intended to represent the demographic makeup of the UK. The summit involved 100 people from across the UK, but since it wasn’t accessible to everyone we helped to run some separate consultations for Disabled people.  What Is The 14 Day Embryo Research Rule? The Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) Act, also known as the 14 day rule, states that once an egg is fertilised, it becomes an embryo and from that moment researchers are allowed to do biomedical research on it for 14 days before they are legally required to destroy it.  Why Did The Consultation Happen? UKRI Sciencewise were looking into

Labour manifesto mapping – promises vs actions

Well Adapt completed some political mapping work with a social enterprise who connect policymakers with frontline workers. We went through Labour’s manifesto to map out their promises around health and social care vs what they actually did once they got into power.  What Was The Purpose Of The Research? We completed this political desk research because when the new Labour government came into power, the social enterprise didn’t know what the priorities of that government were going to be. They wanted to prepare for Labour’s policies to continue their work on engaging with key workers. What Did Well Adapt Do? Well Adapt went through the entirety of Labour’s 2024 manifesto, with a particular focus on health and social care, to identify the key things that the organisation we worked with were interested in. We then mapped out what Labour had said in their manifesto about that area, what they’d actually

Education Accessibility Assessment

Well Adapt completed an accessibility assessment for a disabled people’s organisation dedicated to closing the disability employment gap in the UK. We helped them assess the accessibility of the educational materials in their online courses.  What Did Well Adapt Do? We ran a consultation with disabled and neurodivergent people on whether the organisation’s online learning system was actually working for them. This included 1 to 1 interviews, user testing, and focus groups. Then we wrote a report on how Disabled and neurodivergent people were feeling about the online learning offering.  This allowed the organisation to ensure their resources were accessible to Disabled users.  Common web accessibility challenges include poor contrast between text and the background, lack of screen reader compatibility, lack of captions for audio and video, missing alt text and image descriptions, and support for keyboard only navigation. Taking these into consideration ensures that everyone can access online materials.

Mass Lobby Against Disability Benefit Cuts – Overview

What was the purpose of the Mass Lobby? The Mass Lobby Against Disability Benefit Cuts took place on 21st May 2025. The organisers sought to halt the proposed cuts to benefits for disabled people, namely Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit (UC). The cuts would have pushed over 350,000 disabled people into poverty and prevented them from finding and maintaining work, the complete opposite effect to the government’s plan to get more disabled people into employment.  Who organised the Mass Lobby?  It was organised by Well Adapt, Coalition Against Benefit Cuts, Disabled People Against Cuts, Disability Rights UK, Inclusion London, SIC and our co-sponsors Richard Burgon MP and Neil Duncan Jordan MP.  What is a Mass Lobby? A mass lobby is where a group arranges a large number of meetings between constituents and MPs for the same time. This was an opportunity to push MPs to vote against these

Art Film on Disabled Joy

Our work on Disabled Joy began in a 2021 artist commission from the Raze Collective for our founder to explore the concept of Disabled Joy.  The work culminated in a piece of art film and music which was celebrated as a finalist in the 2021 Sony Talent League, and would go on to inspire further work on the subject. The Sony Talent League was created by Sony and THU, and you can find out more about it on THU’s official website.  It began with this definition of Disabled Joy: “Joy that comes from being disabled, not in spite of it”. To view a transcript of the film and music, please click here.
